- Does a spare key work?
- If it does, the problem is the key rather than the lock, and that is a much smaller job.
- Do you have to lift hard to lock it?
- That is the door dropping on its hinges, not the lock failing. Forcing the handle from there is what breaks the mechanism.
- Does the key turn freely and nothing happen?
- Usually the gearbox behind the cylinder rather than the cylinder itself.
- Whatever you do, do not drill it
- A snapped key in a working cylinder is a cheap job. A cylinder somebody has drilled is a new lock and a new key set.
If you are locked out, say so when you ring. Getting you back in and repairing the lock properly are often two different visits, and the first one is the urgent one.
What changes the price of a locksmith call-out

- Lockout or lock failure. Opening a door without damage is one job. A mechanism that has failed inside the door is another.
- Lock type. A euro cylinder, a multipoint mechanism and a mortice lock are different parts at different prices.

- Whether the door has dropped. A door out of alignment will keep chewing locks, so it usually wants adjusting at the same time.
