What to tell us so we bring the right glass
We cut and make up glass in our own workshop, so the more of this we have on the phone, the more likely it is done in one visit.
- The size of the glass, not the frame
- Measure the pane you can see and add roughly 10mm each way for what sits under the beads. Or send a photo with a tape measure held across it.
- Misted or broken
- Misted between the panes means the seal has failed and the unit is remade. Broken means new glass. They are different jobs.
- Where the pane sits
- Below 800mm, beside a door, or on a stair, and it has to be safety glass by regulation rather than by choice.
- Anything unusual about it
- Obscure patterns, leaded lights, Georgian bars and coated glass are ordered in rather than cut on the day.
Two visits instead of one is the single most common reason a glass job costs more than the customer expected. Five minutes on the phone usually prevents it.
What changes the price of glass replacement
The starting figure is a common-size unit in a sound frame. Four things move it.
- Unit size. Priced by area, and large units need two people to lift and set.
- Single, double or triple. More panes means more glass and a heavier unit.
- Glass specification. Toughened, laminated, obscure, low-E and acoustic all cost differently, and the position often decides which is legal rather than optional.
- Condition of the frame. A frame that takes the new unit as it stands is a straight swap. Perished beads or a dropped sash is more work.
Glass replacement FAQs
Can you replace glass without replacing the frame, and replace glass only not whole window?
Yes - if the frame is sound we replace only the sealed unit or pane, which is faster and much cheaper than a new window.
What causes misting between the panes?
The seal on the double-glazed unit has failed, letting moisture in. The fix is a fresh sealed unit - the frame usually stays.
How fast is glass replacement?
Standard sizes are often same-day. Non-standard or toughened units are measured, made in our workshop and fitted, usually within 24-48 hours.
Do you provide safety glass where required?
Yes. We supply and fit toughened and laminated safety glass that meets building regulations for doors and low-level glazing.
Is it cheaper because you make the glass?
Often, yes. Because we cut and make units in our own Trafford Park workshop, replacements can cost less than firms who buy glass in.
How much does glass replacement cost in the UK?
Size, thickness and type drive the price. A plain sealed unit in a standard casement is the cheapest job; toughened, laminated, obscure, fire rated or shaped glass all cost more because each is made to order. We quote per pane from your measurements or a photo.
How long does replacement glass take to make?
Common sealed units are usually available the same day or next. Toughened glass has to be cut and then heat treated, so it cannot be made on the spot, and shaped or coloured units take longer again. We confirm the date when you order.
What thickness glass do I need?
Most domestic windows use 4mm in a sealed unit. Doors and low level openings need 4mm or 6mm toughened. Larger panes, balustrades and shopfronts go up to 10mm or 12mm. We work the thickness out from the opening size, so you do not have to.
Is toughened glass required by law for doors?
In practice, yes. Building regulations treat glazing in and beside doors, and anything below 800mm from the floor, as a critical location that must be safety glass. That means toughened or laminated, and we fit to that standard as a matter of course.
How do I measure a sealed unit?
Take the width and height of the visible glass, then add roughly 10mm to each so the measurement reaches into the rebate behind the beading. Measure the thickness at the edge if you can see it. Send us the numbers and a photo and we will sanity check them before cutting.
