What the symptom usually means
Handle will not lift
A upvc door handle won't lift when the door is shut but works fine when open means alignment. If it is stiff with the door open too, the gearbox is going.
Handle lifts, key will not turn
When the key turns but door won't open it is usually the cylinder rather than the mechanism. uPVC door lock repair is cheap to put right, and worth upgrading to anti snap while the door is open.
Only sticks in summer
A upvc door swollen in heat, or a upvc door won't lock in hot weather, is thermal expansion. A millimetre or two of movement is enough to miss the keeps.
Draughts round the frame
A upvc door draughty along one edge, or a upvc door letting in cold air at the bottom, is usually the gasket or a dropped sash rather than the door itself.
Will not latch shut
A upvc door won't latch often means worn keeps or a moved frame. uPVC door adjustment and uPVC door mechanism repair fix it without new parts in most cases. A patio door won't lock for the same reason.
Seals perished
uPVC door seal replacement where the rubber has gone hard and flat. Cheap, quick, and the difference is immediate in winter.
Quick test: open the door and lift the handle. If everything throws smoothly with the door open, it is alignment. If the handle is stiff even then, it is the gearbox.

Before & after

Why a uPVC door stops locking
Almost every door that will not lock has one of four things wrong, and only one of them is expensive.
- You have to lift hard to get it to lock
- The door has dropped on its hinges. Most are adjustable, so this is usually labour and no parts at all.
- Handle lifts but the key will not turn
- The multipoint gearbox. Replaceable on its own, without touching the door.
- Fine in winter, sticking in summer
- Expansion. It wants adjusting to suit, not replacing.
- Key turns round and round
- The cam on the cylinder or a broken follower. A small part.
The slab and frame usually outlast two or three mechanisms. A door that will not lock is a repair until proven otherwise.
What changes the price of a uPVC door repair
Most doors that will not lock need adjustment rather than replacement.
- Alignment or mechanism. A dropped door that needs realigning is the cheapest fix. A failed multipoint mechanism is parts as well.
- Which mechanism. Multipoint gearboxes vary by manufacturer and length, and some are obsolete and need a compatible match.
- Cylinder and handles. An anti-snap cylinder upgrade is often worth doing at the same time.
- Damage to the slab or frame. A forced door may need more than hardware, and that is priced after we have seen it.
UPVC door repair FAQs
Why will my UPVC door not lock?
The most common cause is a worn or failed multipoint locking mechanism, or a door that has dropped so the hooks no longer line up. Both are repairs we do routinely.
Can you fix a dropped door without replacing it?
Usually yes. We adjust or replace the hinges and realign the door so it closes and locks properly again.
Do you carry parts for common doors?
We stock the most common multipoint mechanisms, cylinders, handles and hinges, so many repairs are completed on the first visit.
Is my door secure enough - can you upgrade the lock?
We can fit British Standard, anti-snap euro cylinders that meet insurance requirements and resist lock snapping.
Do you repair composite and aluminium doors too?
Yes - as well as UPVC we repair composite, aluminium, patio and bi-fold doors, and can source or make matching parts.
How much does uPVC door repair cost in the UK?
An adjustment is the cheapest visit, because it is labour only. A euro cylinder is a small part. A full multipoint mechanism is the dearest of the three, since the strip itself costs and the door needs realigning after. We price the part and the labour separately.
Can a uPVC door be repaired or does it need replacing?
Almost always repaired. The frame and slab outlast the moving parts by decades, and it is the gearbox, hinges, handles and seals that wear. Replacement only makes sense where the slab itself has warped or the frame has failed.
How long does a uPVC door repair take?
An adjustment takes under an hour. A cylinder swap is about the same. A full mechanism change is one to two hours, depending on how much the door has to be realigned afterwards. Nearly all of it is done on the first visit.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace a uPVC door?
Repair, by a wide margin. A new door is a manufactured item plus fitting, where a mechanism is one part and an hour of labour. We only recommend replacing when the repair would cost a meaningful share of a new door.
