Composite front doors

What is inside a composite door
The core is what separates a composite door from a plastic one, and it is the part you cannot see on a showroom floor.
GRP composite door
A GRP composite door uses a glass reinforced plastic skin over an insulating core. Tough, low maintenance and the most common build.
Timber core
A timber core composite door has a solid engineered hardwood core, so it is heavier, stiffer and closer to a real timber door in feel.
Solidor
Solidor composite doors are the best known timber core brand, and the usual reference point when people compare door slabs.

How much does a composite door cost fitted in the UK?
Price follows the door slab, the glass design, the colour and the hardware rather than a single figure. A plain slab in a standard colour with obscure glass is the cheapest thing we make; a timber core door with a decorative glass panel and a side light is the dearest. Because we manufacture rather than resell, there is no distributor margin in the quote.
How long do composite doors last?
The slab itself is a long term item. What ages first is the hardware: the multipoint gearbox, the hinges and the cylinder, all of which we repair rather than replace the door. A composite door that is adjusted once or twice in its life will outlast the uPVC door it replaced.
Composite vs uPVC door, which is better?
A composite door has a solid core, so it is heavier, stiffer and better insulated than a hollow uPVC slab. It also holds its colour and does not flex in the heat the way uPVC can. uPVC costs less. For a front door on the street face, composite is usually the better buy; for a back door in a sheltered spot, uPVC is often enough.
Are composite doors secure?
The slab is the strong part, and the lock is the weak one. A composite door with a basic cylinder is no safer than any other door, because lock snapping bypasses the slab entirely. Ours are fitted with anti snap cylinders as standard and can be specified to PAS 24.
Can composite doors be painted?
They can, but they should not need to be. The colour is part of the skin rather than a coat on top, so it does not flake or need redoing. Painting over it means committing to repainting it from then on.
Do composite doors fade?
Darker colours take more sun than lighter ones, and a south facing door will always weather faster than a north facing one. Modern skins hold colour well, and fading is gradual rather than patchy. It is one reason anthracite and black have replaced the older reds and blues on exposed frontages.
How long does it take to fit a composite door?
Fitting is half a day for a straightforward swap into an existing frame, longer where the opening has to be altered or a side panel is involved. The manufacturing time before that is the longer part, and we confirm it when the order is placed.
What actually makes a composite door secure
The slab is the part everyone looks at and the part that matters least. Almost every forced entry through a composite door is an attack on something else.
- The cylinder
- Three star, anti-snap, anti-bump, anti-drill. Cylinder snapping is the single most common method of forcing a composite door, and a good cylinder is not expensive.
- The mechanism
- Hooks as well as bolts, and how many locking points engage down the length of the door.
- The hinges
- Whether they carry security studs that hold the door in the frame even if the hinge pins go.
- The frame and its fixings
- A good door is only ever as secure as what it is screwed into.
- The glass in any panel
- Laminated, particularly in a panel within arm's reach of the handle.
PAS 24 is the standard worth asking about by name. If a quote does not mention it, ask why.
What changes the price of a composite door
A composite door is priced as a complete unit: slab, frame, glass and hardware.
- Style and colour. Solid colours are standard, and some finishes and dual colours cost more.
- Glazing. A plain solid door is the base. Decorative or triple glazed panels add to it.
- Lock specification. An anti-snap, three-star cylinder and the mechanism behind it are what your insurer cares about.
- Frame and side panels. A new frame and threshold, or a side light, changes the size of the job.
