Safety glass replacement Manchester, cut and certified in-house

Glass in doors, beside doors or below 800mm can't legally be replaced with ordinary float glass. It needs toughened or laminated safety glass, and it needs the kitemark to prove it.

We cut both at our Trafford Park workshop and fit them across Manchester, homes and businesses alike. Same-day for common sizes, 24/7 for shopfronts and offices that can't wait until Monday.

Every pane we fit in a critical location is certified and noted on the invoice, so building control and insurers get what they need.

20-45 minutes
Typical response to Manchester via the A5081 and Regent Road
  • The 24 hour glazier line is answered at the workshop, not a call centre
  • Boards, standard glass sizes and door hardware already on the van
  • Fixed price from a WhatsApp photo before we set off
  • We photograph everything and invoice it properly for your insurer
What we cover

Safety Glass Replacement services we handle

Toughened glass

Heat-treated panes that break into small blunt pieces, cut to size.

Laminated glass

Holds together on impact. The right choice where security matters.

Door glass

Glazing in and beside doors is a critical location. We fit certified panes.

Low-level glazing

Anything below 800mm needs safety glass by law. We sort it.

Shopfronts and offices

Commercial panes replaced out of hours so you keep trading.

Certification

Every pane kitemarked and noted on your invoice for building control.

Where the law applies

Critical locations, in plain English

Building regulations call certain positions critical locations. Glass in those spots has to be safety glass, and it is not a matter of preference.

In and beside doors

Glass in doors regulations cover the door pane itself and any panel within 300mm of the edge, up to 1500mm from the floor.

Low level windows

Low level glazing safety applies below 800mm from the floor, which catches most full-height windows and patio door side panels.

Stairs and landings

Glass near stairs regulations are stricter again, because a fall onto the pane is the risk being designed out.

Bathrooms

Bathroom glass safety matters because wet floors and low glazing meet in the same room. Obscure toughened glass covers both duties at once.

The standards

Kitemark safety glass to BS 6206 safety glass and the current EN equivalent, with Part K building regulations glass duties met and documented.

Rented property

Landlord safety glass compliance, with a written spec per pane so you can evidence it at inspection or renewal.

Critical location glazing is the phrase your building inspector will use. If a pane in one of those positions has broken, it cannot go back as ordinary float glass.

Specification

Thicknesses and types we cut

Toughened

Toughened glass replacement in 6mm toughened glass for domestic openings and 10mm toughened glass where the pane is large or free standing. Tempered glass replacement is the same thing under its American name.

Laminated

Laminated glass replacement in laminated 6.4mm glass as standard, stepping up to security laminated glass and anti bandit laminated glass where the risk warrants it.

Fire rated

Fire rated safety glass to the integrity period the door or screen was specified at, supplied with its certification.

Cut and finished

Safety glass cut to size with polished edge toughened glass where an edge is exposed, and toughened glass with cutouts for handles, hinges and locks.

Toughened glass Manchester wide, cut and heat treated to order. Nothing is trimmed on site, because toughened glass cannot be cut once it has been treated.

Applications

Where it usually goes

Doors and screens

Door side panel glass, the most commonly broken critical location pane in any house.

Balustrades

Balustrade safety glass to stairs, landings and terraces, always laminated so a failed pane stays in its frame.

Around the home

A toughened glass table top, toughened glass shelves and a glass splashback behind a hob, all cut to template.

Care and education

School safety glass replacement in half terms, nursery safety glazing and care home safety glass, scheduled around the people using the building.

I cannot say enough about the quality of people and service in Prime Fab! We were having a double extension to our house, and a summer house built at the end of our garden, out builders let us down very last minute with the finishing touches. However, Prime Fab picked up where they left off and turned a terrible experience into an amazing one for us! Thank you again and we wish you success

Good to know

Common questions, honest answers

What does safety glass replacement cost?

Priced by pane size and spec. Send sizes or a WhatsApp photo to 07533 830717 for a fixed quote before we travel.

Do you certify the glass for building control or insurers?

Yes. Every pane we fit in a critical location carries the correct BS EN kitemark, and we note it on your invoice for building control or your insurer.

Do you cover shops, offices and schools?

Yes. Shopfront doors, office partitions, communal entrances and low-level glazing across Greater Manchester. We work out of hours so your premises can keep trading.

Where does the law require safety glass?

Glass in and around doors, glazing below 800mm from the floor, and most commercial settings. If a pane in those zones breaks, it must be replaced with toughened or laminated safety glass, not ordinary float glass.

What is safety glass?

Glass treated so it fails safely rather than into blades. Toughened glass is heated and rapidly cooled so it breaks into blunt granules. Laminated glass has a plastic interlayer that holds the pieces in place when it cracks. Ordinary float glass does neither, which is why it is not permitted in critical locations.

Is toughened glass required by law in the UK?

In critical locations, effectively yes. Building regulations require glazing in and beside doors, below 800mm, and around stairs to be safety glass. Toughened and laminated both satisfy that. Elsewhere in a building it is your choice.

How do I know if my glass is toughened?

Look for a small etched stamp in one corner, usually naming the standard and the maker. If there is no mark, assume it is not toughened. A toughened pane also breaks into small blunt pieces rather than long shards, though that is not a test worth running deliberately.

Toughened vs laminated glass, which should I choose?

Toughened is stronger against impact and cheaper, so it suits most domestic openings. Laminated stays in the frame when broken, which is why it is used for balustrades, overhead glazing and anywhere security matters. For a shopfront that has already been hit once, laminated is the better answer.

How much does toughened glass cost?

It is priced by area, thickness and any processing: cutouts, polished edges and shapes all add. A small obscure bathroom pane is inexpensive; a large 10mm balustrade panel is not. We quote per pane from your sizes.

How long does toughened glass take to make?

It cannot be made on the spot, because it has to be cut to final size first and then heat treated. Standard sizes are usually a couple of days. Shaped panes, cutouts and laminated build-ups take longer, and we confirm the date when you order.

What the regulations say

Where safety glass is required by law

In a critical location the specification is decided by Approved Document K, not by preference or by budget.

Below 800mm in a window
Measured from floor level. Most ground-floor windows with a low sill fall into this.
Within 300mm of a door, up to 1500mm
The zone beside a door where somebody stumbling would put a hand through.
Any glazing in a door itself
Up to 1500mm from the floor, without exception.
Toughened or laminated
Both satisfy the requirement. Toughened breaks into blunt granules; laminated holds together on an interlayer, which is why it is specified where the glass also has a security or overhead job to do.

Every pane of safety glass carries a permanent mark in a corner naming the standard it meets. Replacing like for like in a critical location still has to meet the current standard, not the one that applied when the house was built.

Straight answer on cost

What changes the price of safety glass

In a critical location the specification is decided by regulation, not preference.

  • Toughened or laminated. Both satisfy the regulations in most positions, but they are made differently and priced differently.
  • Pane size and thickness. Thickness is set by the size and the position, and it is the main driver.
  • Class required. Building control may call for a specific impact class, which narrows what can be used.
  • Whether it is marked. Safety glass carries a permanent mark, and supplying the evidence for a sign-off is part of the job.
