Almost everyone prices bifold doors twice. Once optimistically, from an online headline, and once realistically, from actual quotes. The gap between those two numbers comes from the way bifolds are priced, per panel, per material, per specification, and from the extras that headline figures quietly leave out. As a rule of thumb, quality aluminium runs £1,500-£2,500 per panel installed. uPVC comes in around two-thirds of that, though it only makes sense up to three or four panels, beyond which frame bulk and panel weight start to tell. All the figures above assume standard colours, A-rated double glazing and a straightforward opening.
What moves the price
- Material. Aluminium dominates the bifold market for sound structural reasons. Slimmer frames, bigger panels, better longevity under daily folding. uPVC saves money on smaller openings, while timber sits above aluminium and wants decorating for life.
- Glazing spec. Triple glazing adds £80-£150 per panel. Solar-control glass for south-facing openings adds £40-£90, and integrated blinds run £150-£300 per panel, money well spent for anyone who hates cleaning blinds.
- Colour. Standard white and anthracite are base price. Non-stock RAL shades and dual colour add 5-15%.
- Thresholds. Flush, level thresholds for that seamless indoor-outdoor flow cost a little more than standard weathered ones, and they need the drainage thinking through. Specify them properly rather than cheaply.
- Configuration. An odd panel count allows a 'traffic door' that opens on its own for everyday use, no folding the whole wall back just to let the dog out. It changes how you live with the doors and costs very little.
- The opening itself. If you're widening an opening, the steel lintel and the building work sit outside the door quote. That's commonly £1,500-£4,000, and it's the biggest source of budget surprises we see.
The costs cheap quotes hide
Bifolds punish corner-cutting harder than anything else we make, because they're engineering in motion. A wall of glass that has to fold, glide and seal thousands of times over its life. Budget systems save their money in the running gear, the alignment tolerances and the gaskets, which are precisely the parts that decide whether year-five operation is fingertip-smooth or a two-handed wrestle. Bifold or big slider? Price the alternative
For the same opening, sliding doors often come in 10-20% under bifolds while offering bigger uninterrupted panes. The trade-off is that only half the opening ever clears. Bifolds win for the fully open wall and those party-wall summer afternoons. Sliders win for glass area, winter views and slightly gentler prices, and French doors remain the budget champion for anything under two metres. The right answer is architectural as much as financial, and a decent supplier will price both without being pushed.
Getting maximum bifold per pound
- Buy factory-direct. Bifolds carry some of the industry's chunkiest sales markups, and fabricator pricing routinely saves four figures
- Match the panel count to the opening rather than forcing panels in. Fewer, larger panels usually look better and cost less
- Specify the traffic door and level threshold at order time, because retrofitting either is miserable
- If the opening faces south, put your glazing money into solar control. An all-glass wall without it is a greenhouse in July
- Check the security spec: PAS 24 certification and multi-point locking, the standards our doors carry

Fitting the doors into the wider project budget
If your bifold belongs to an extension or knock-through, give it its proper place in the overall numbers. The door set is typically 10-20% of a rear extension's cost, the steelwork and glazing together define the room, and both are things you'll look at every day for decades, unlike most of what the rest of the budget buys. The regret we hear isn't 'we spent too much on the doors'. It's 'we skimped on the opening width and wish we'd gone a metre wider while the wall was already open'. Structural width is cheapest while the builder is on site and impossible afterwards. If in doubt, buy the bigger hole, and phase the fancier glazing spec later if money's tight.
One timing note for 2026. Bifold demand peaks from spring bank holiday through August, so ordering in winter or early spring gets you better lead times and often keener pricing. It also means the doors are folding open on the first warm weekend rather than arriving in September.
