Every replacement window in Britain now arrives wearing a rainbow label, cousin to the ones on fridges and boilers, grading it from E up through A++. Most buyers glance at the letter, assume bigger is better and move on. Fair enough, but it leaves you unable to judge whether the A++ premium is worth paying, or whether a salesman's 'super-efficient' claim survives contact with the small print.

What the label measures: the whole window's energy balance

The Window Energy Rating, or WER, administered by schemes like BFRC, scores the complete window, frame and glass together. That matters, because the frame is typically the weakest link. Behind the headline letter sits an equation with three inputs. Heat lost through the window, its U-value. Free solar heat gained through the glass, the g-value. And leakage of air through the assembly, the L-factor. A window that loses little, gains usefully from sunlight and doesn't leak scores highest. Ratings run E to A++, and each band represents a step in net annual energy performance per square metre.

The three numbers, decoded

  • U-value (W/m²K), heat escaping. Lower is better: building regs demand 1.4 or better for replacements; quality double glazing achieves 1.2; triple reaches 0.8. Full detail in our U-values guide.
  • g-value (0-1), solar gain. The fraction of the sun's heat admitted. Higher harvests more free warmth in winter; lower (solar-control glass) prevents summer overheating in big south-facing glazing. Neither is 'better', because it depends on orientation.
  • L-factor, air leakage. Should be effectively zero on a well-made, well-gasketed window. Non-trivial leakage on a datasheet is a quiet confession about build quality.

How much difference the letters make

Band-to-band steps are modest. Going from A to A++ is worth roughly 10-20 kWh per square metre of window per year, which comes to a few pounds per window annually at 2026 prices. The chasm lies between old and new. Windows from the 1990s predate the scheme entirely and would rate around D or E, losing two to three times the heat of an A++ unit. So don't agonise or overpay dramatically for the final plus. Do refuse anything below A. Reading a label like a professional

  • Check the rating is for the window system you're buying, not a different flagship product from the same range
  • Ask for the certificate: legitimate WER ratings are verifiable with the scheme; 'A++ equivalent' means unrated
  • Compare U-values alongside letters, two A-rated windows can differ usefully in U-value because solar gain tops up the score
  • For north-facing or shaded elevations, weight U-value over g-value: there's little sun to harvest
  • For big south/west glazing, discuss solar control, the best letter isn't always the most comfortable glass

Where the rating stops helping

The label grades energy and nothing else. It says nothing about security certification, acoustic performance, hardware quality or the reinforcement inside the frame, which are exactly the things that separate cheap windows from quality ones at the same letter. No rating survives bad installation either. Gaps around a perfectly rated frame leak as if the label never existed. Treat A++ as the entry ticket, not the whole decision.

Borrowing the appliance-label format gave the industry a common yardstick, and it worked. Within a decade the label had pushed Low-E glass, argon fills and warm-edge spacers from premium options to default specification, because products lacking them wore their D-rating in public. Today's floor, where nothing below C may legally be installed as a replacement and reputable fabricators ship A or better as standard, is the label quietly doing its job. Doors use an equivalent doorset rating scheme, and composite doors typically achieve strong bands thanks to their insulated cores. As with windows, ask for the certificate and the U-value together.

Do skylights and roof windows carry the same ratings?

Roof glazing is rated on the same principles but performs in a harsher position, since heat rises to it and the sun hits it hardest. U-values matter more there, and solar control is worth discussing for south-facing pitches. Compare like for like within roof windows rather than against vertical ones.
