Windows hardly ever fail overnight. They decline quietly. A draught here, a stiff handle there, a little more condensation each winter, until one day you realise the lounge never feels warm and the frames look tired in every photo of the house. The trick is telling which symptoms are a £90 repair and which are a window announcing it's done.
These are the ten signs we come across most often around Greater Manchester, in rough order of seriousness, with a frank note on which ones don't need full replacement.
1. Draughts you can feel with the window closed
Run a hand (or a candle flame) around the frame edge on a windy day. Movement means failed gaskets, or a frame that's dropped out of square. New gaskets sort the first. The second means the window's structure has shifted, and that's the beginning of the end.
2. Condensation between the panes
Fog you can't wipe off means the sealed unit has failed. One misted unit in an otherwise sound window is a repair, and our misted double glazing guide explains it. Several units misting across the house means the frames are flexing and breaking seals. That's replacement territory.
3. Windows that stick, drop or won't lock
A sash you have to lift before it locks, hinges that grind, a handle that takes two hands. Hardware wears out, and much of it can be swapped. But once adjustment stops holding because the frame itself has warped, each 'fix' lasts a few months at best. Our repair team will tell you which side of that line you're on.
4. Discoloured, chalky or cracking frames
Yellowed uPVC isn't just a looks problem. It means the plastic is degrading and turning brittle. Cracks at the corner welds are structural and can't be repaired. Frames in this state are usually 25+ years old and performing far below modern standards.
5. Rooms that are cold near the windows (and bills that prove it)
If the sofa side of the room is always the cold side, your glazing is dumping heat. Old double glazing loses two to three times more than a modern A++ unit, and we put proper numbers on it in our heat loss guide.
6. Outside noise that's got louder over the years
Seals compress and cavities lose their gas over time, so acoustic performance fades along with the thermal kind. Traffic sounds louder even though the traffic hasn't changed? The windows are ageing audibly.
7. Water coming in, or refusing to leave
Rain on the inside sill, swollen plaster around the opening, black mould in the reveal. All of it means water is getting past seals or pooling in blocked drainage. Caught early it's maintenance. Left for a few seasons, it damages the fabric of the wall as well as the window.
8. Single glazing, anywhere
If any habitable room still has single glazing, replacing it is the single highest-value improvement the house can get. Heat, noise, condensation and security, all fixed in one go.
9. Security that wouldn't slow anyone down

After a survey visit to measure each opening, your windows are manufactured to size, which takes two to three weeks at our factory. Fitting a typical house takes one to two days. Each window comes out and its replacement goes in within the hour, room by room, so the house is never open to the weather. Our fitters work under dust sheets, take away the old frames and debris, and make good the reveals. You don't need to shift furniture beyond clearing a working space at each window, and you don't need to move out. You don't even need to take the day off if someone's home to let us in.

Frequently asked questions
How often should windows be replaced?
Quality uPVC and aluminium windows last 25-35 years. Rather than replacing on age alone, act on symptoms. Multiple failed units, warped or brittle frames, and persistent draughts are the reliable triggers.
Should I replace all windows at once or in stages?
Whole-house replacement gets better pricing and one round of disruption. But phasing, worst elevation first, is a perfectly sound strategy on a budget, and we'll quote both ways on request.
Can I just replace the glass instead of the whole window?
If the frame is sound, yes. Misted or broken sealed units can be swapped individually at a fraction of window cost. If frames have moved or degraded, new glass in an old frame is money down the drain.
What time of year is best to replace windows?

How disruptive is window replacement?
A typical house takes 1-2 days. Each room loses its window for 30-60 minutes, dust sheets and vacuuming come as standard, and décor damage is rare with experienced installers working from the outside where possible.
What guarantee should new windows come with?
Ten years is the credible benchmark for frames, sealed units and installation. In writing, from a company with a trading history that suggests it'll still exist to honour it. Be wary of lifetime guarantees from firms younger than the guarantee, and check whether hardware like hinges and handles is included. Ours is.
