What we cover

Misted Double Glazing Repair services we handle

Misted sealed units

Condensation between the panes means the double glazing seal failed. The failed sealed unit comes out and the misted double glazing goes with it.

Low-E glass upgrades

A low-e glass upgrade in replacement sealed units, fitted at swap time for warmer rooms.

Acoustic glass

Laminated acoustic units for rooms facing busy roads.

Toughened where needed

Critical locations get kitemarked safety glass.

Georgian bars and leaded looks

Matched to the rest of the house, made in-house.

Multi-unit visits

Several cloudy windows or foggy windows? Blown double glazing swapped whole-house, priced keenly per window.

Recognise it

What people call it, and what it is

Everybody describes this fault differently. They are all the same thing: the seal around the sealed unit has failed and let damp air in.

Fog and cloud

Foggy windows repair, cloudy windows repair or steamed up windows repair. Different words, one fault, one fix.

Water where it should not be

Condensation between window panes, condensation inside double glazing, or actual water inside double glazing pooling along the bottom edge.

You cannot clean it off

The giveaway is that you can't clean inside double glazing. If the smear is between the panes, no cloth reaches it, because the moisture is sealed in.

Marks and smears

A window looks smeared inside, or white marks inside double glazing where minerals have dried onto the glass. That staining is permanent.

It has gone dull

Double glazing gone cloudy, moisture between glass panes, or a blown window unit. Failed double glazing all describes the same failed edge seal.

It comes and goes

Misty windows won't clear on a cold morning but look fine by noon. Double glazing condensation in winter is worst because the temperature gap is biggest.

Only one window misted so far? Units fail individually, so the rest of the house is not necessarily next. There is no need to replace windows that are still clear.

The fix

What we actually replace

The unit, not the window

Replace glass not whole window. The sealed unit lifts out of the frame and a new one goes back in, so this is double glazing repair not replace.

What it costs

Sealed unit replacement cost is driven by size and glass spec, not by how bad the misting looks. A small bathroom pane is the cheapest job on the list.

Built better than the original

Argon filled sealed units with a warm edge spacer bar, which is where most older units failed in the first place.

A free upgrade in performance

A rated sealed units as standard, so a window that was failing ends up warmer than it was when it was new.

I cannot say enough about the quality of people and service in Prime Fab! We were having a double extension to our house, and a summer house built at the end of our garden, out builders let us down very last minute with the finishing touches. However, Prime Fab picked up where they left off and turned a terrible experience into an amazing one for us! Thank you again and we wish you success

Common questions, honest answers

How much does misted double glazing repair cost in Manchester?

Priced per unit by size and spec. Send rough sizes or photos on WhatsApp for a fixed quote. Making units in-house keeps Manchester prices below bought-in glass merchants.

Why has my double glazing misted up?

The edge seal of the unit has failed and moist air has crept in. Once the desiccant is saturated, condensation forms between the panes. It can't be polished away. The sealed unit needs replacing, but the frame itself is fine and stays.

Can I fix a misted unit myself with a drill kit?

We'd say don't. Drill kits vent the unit but the fog comes back, and the insulating gas is gone for good. A properly built replacement unit costs less than you'd think.

How quickly can you replace a misted unit in Manchester?

We measure on the first visit, 20 to 45 minutes away via the A5081 and Regent Road. Then we build the unit at our own workshop and refit it. Usually 24 to 48 hours end to end.

Can misted double glazing be fixed, and why do double glazed windows mist up?

The two panes are held apart by a spacer bar and sealed at the edge. Over years of the glass expanding and contracting, that seal fails, damp air gets into the cavity and condenses when the outer pane goes cold. Nothing you do inside the room causes it or cures it.

Is misted double glazing covered by warranty?

Sealed units usually carry their own guarantee, commonly around ten years, separate from the window frame. It is worth checking your original paperwork before paying, because a unit that fails inside its term should be replaced by whoever supplied it.

Do you need to replace the whole window if misted?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who says you do. The frame, hinges, handles and locks are all unaffected. Only the glass unit has failed, and only the glass unit gets replaced.

How long do double glazed units last?

Most give a good couple of decades, though south facing windows and large panes tend to go first because they take the biggest temperature swings. Modern warm edge spacers last longer than the aluminium spacers used in older units.

Can you drill and dry misted double glazing?

You can, and we do not recommend it. Drilling and venting a unit clears the visible fog for a while but leaves the cavity open to the air, so the insulating gas is gone and the misting returns. It treats the symptom and shortens the life of the glass.

The honest answer

Can a misted unit be dried out?

It is the question we are asked most on these jobs, so here is the straight version.

No, and here is why
The mist is there because the seal round the edge of the unit has failed and the desiccant inside is saturated. Once air can get in, moisture can get in.
What about drilling and venting?
It clears the view for a while. The unit is no longer sealed, the gas fill is long gone and it is no longer insulating properly, so you have bought appearance rather than performance.
How to be sure it is the unit
Wipe it. Condensation on the room side wipes off. If it is between the panes, nothing you do from either side will touch it.
What it is costing meanwhile
A failed unit has lost its argon and most of its insulating value, so you are heating the street through that pane every winter.

The good news is that the frame almost never needs replacing with it. We remake the unit to size and refit it into what is already there.

Straight answer on cost

What changes the price of a misted unit

A replacement sealed unit starts at £250 supplied and fitted, and keeping the frame is always cheaper than a new window.

  • Unit size. Priced by area, like all glass.
  • How many have gone. Units of the same age tend to fail within a few years of each other, and doing them together costs less each.
  • Glass specification. Matching what is there, or upgrading to low-E or acoustic while the frame is open.
  • Condition of beads and gaskets. Perished beads are replaced rather than refitted, which is a small addition.
