What the symptom usually means
It will not shut or lock
A upvc window won't close, or a upvc window won't lock once it is shut. Nine times in ten the sash has dropped and the cams no longer meet their keeps.
It will not open
A upvc window won't open usually means seized friction stays rather than a broken handle. Forcing it is what turns a cheap job into a new sash.
Stiff or broken handle
A stiff window handle is the warning; a window handle broken off is what follows. uPVC window handle replacement takes minutes if the gearbox is sound.
The sash has dropped
A sagging window sash, or a window catches on frame when you close it. Both are the same fault at different stages, and both are a hinge job.
It feels loose in the wall
A window falling out of frame is rare but urgent. Usually the fixings have failed or the cill beneath has rotted, and it needs looking at quickly.
Draughts, rattles and leaks
Draughty upvc window repair where the gasket has flattened, a window rattles in the wind because the cams are under-set, or water coming in around window edges from a failed seal.
Not sure which it is? A upvc window adjustment is the cheapest visit we do, and it fixes more faults than people expect.
The hardware behind the fault
Hinges and stays
Window hinge replacement in the standard stay lengths, plus egress hinge replacement where a fire escape window hinge is required by regulation.
Locks and restrictors
uPVC window lock repair on espag gearboxes, window restrictor repair, and a child safety window lock fitted where there are young children upstairs.
Seals and beading
Gasket replacement upvc window work and window beading replacement, the two cheap parts that cure most draughts and rattles.
Ventilation
Trickle vent fitting where a room has no background ventilation, retrofitted into the existing frame rather than the whole window.
Frames and cills
uPVC window frame repair and uPVC window cill replacement, for when the frame is sound but the cill below it has gone.
Glass and bars
Misted upvc window repair, Georgian bar repair matched to the rest of the house, and replace glass in upvc window openings without touching the frame.
As a window repair specialist that also manufactures, we can make a part that is no longer sold rather than telling you the window is finished.

Before & after

Such a great experience! Super happy with the service, highly recommend!
Reliable, honest, and professional. They manufactured and installed our new composite front door, and the finish is perfect. Highly recommended.
Common questions, honest answers
Can you fix draughty uPVC windows in Manchester?
Yes. Draughts usually mean perished gaskets or a sash out of adjustment. Both are quick fixes. We re-gasket, realign and reset the compression so the window seals like new.
A window has misted up between the panes. Is that repairable?
The sealed unit gets replaced and the frame stays. We build the new unit ourselves, so turnaround for Manchester is normally 24 to 48 hours.
The rubber seals have gone hard and shrunk. Fixable?
Yes. We re-gasket with new rubber cut to your profile. A cheap fix that kills draughts and rattles.
A window is jammed shut. Can you open it without breaking it?
Usually. Seized espags and swollen sashes open with the right tools and patience. We free it, service the mechanism and set it up properly.
How much does uPVC window repair cost?
An adjustment is the cheapest visit because it is labour only. A handle or a hinge is a small part on top. A sealed unit costs more because it is made to order. We price from a photo and the sizes before travelling, so the figure is agreed rather than discovered.
Can uPVC windows be repaired, or do they need replacing?
Repaired, nearly always. The frame and sash outlast the moving parts by decades. What wears out is hinges, handles, gaskets and sealed units, and every one of those is a part rather than a window.
Is it worth repairing old uPVC windows?
If the frames are sound and the only faults are hardware and misted units, yes, comfortably. If the frames themselves have gone brittle or the sashes have warped, the repair stops being good value. We tell you which of the two you have before quoting.
Window repair vs replacement cost, how do they compare?
A repair is typically a fraction of a replacement, because you are buying one component and an hour of labour rather than a manufactured window and a fitting slot. The point where that stops being true is when several faults land on the same window at once.

Glass cut and frames made in Manchester
Behind every Manchester call-out is a real workshop at 7 Trafford Moss Road, Trafford Park. Glass cutting, sealed units and frame fabrication all happen under that roof.
No third-party suppliers means no waiting. Fixed prices, the right stock on the van, and odd sizes remade within 24 to 48 hours. Most of Manchester sits 20 to 45 minutes from the workshop door, traffic included.
What the fault usually turns out to be
uPVC windows fail in a small number of predictable ways. This is what each one normally means before anybody has looked at it.
- Handle turns but nothing moves
- The gearbox inside the locking strip along the edge of the sash. The handle itself is almost always fine.
- Will not close without a shove
- Worn friction stays, or the sash has dropped. Both are hardware, not frame.
- Draught along one edge only
- Either the gasket has shrunk back or the sash is not pulling in evenly. Cheap either way.
- Water sitting on the inside sill
- Usually blocked drainage slots in the bottom of the frame rather than a failed seal. Worth clearing before anyone quotes.
- Handle stiff but working
- Very often dry hinges. Worth trying before any part is replaced.
The frame outlasts the hardware on almost every uPVC window. If someone quotes you a new window for any of the above, get a second opinion.
What changes the price of a uPVC window repair
Repair is almost always cheaper than replacement. What you pay depends on which part gave up.
- Which component failed. A handle is the cheapest thing on a window. A hinge set costs more, and a locking mechanism more again.
- Whether the part is still made. Current patterns are off the shelf. Obsolete hardware has to be matched, which takes longer.
- How many windows. Hardware of the same age tends to fail together, and doing several in one visit costs less each.
- Whether the frame is sound. A sound frame is worth repairing. Once the frame itself has gone, replacement is the honest answer.
